If you’re wondering what AI means for your career, start with what you did yesterday.

The emails. The paperwork. The conversation that took longer than expected. The problem you spotted before anyone else noticed it.

Which parts followed a familiar pattern? Which needed your judgement? Which required you to be there in person?

Those questions make a big, unsettling subject easier to examine. They give you something specific to work with.

A job title can hide a lot

Two people with the same title might spend their days doing very different things. One might handle routine requests, while another deals mostly with exceptions. One might produce reports, while another uses those reports to decide what happens next.

Consider two customer enquiries

In the first, someone wants to know where their order is. There’s a tracking number, a delivery update and a straightforward answer.

In the second, someone has received the wrong item for an important event tomorrow. The usual replacement process will take too long. They’re upset, stock is limited and someone needs to decide what the business can reasonably offer.

Both enquiries might appear under “responding to customers” in a job description. But designing a system to handle each one reliably raises different questions.

What information does it need? What decisions can it make? When should it ask for help? Who takes responsibility if it gets the answer wrong?

These are useful questions whether you’re evaluating an AI tool or thinking about your own role.

Try a small audit of your working day

Where help would be useful, and where you matter most

Write down five to ten things you actually did yesterday. Be specific. “Checked three invoices against purchase orders” is more useful than “admin”.

For each task, ask:

  • Are the instructions clear, and is the information easy to access?
  • How often do unusual cases come up?
  • How would I check whether the result was correct?
  • What would happen if someone got it wrong?
  • Does it require physical action, a relationship or a decision I’m accountable for?

Then choose one task you’d like help with. Define what a useful result would look like before trying a tool. Include the time you spend checking and correcting its output when deciding whether it helped.

The aim is to understand where assistance would be useful and where your involvement matters most.

Keep the employment question open

Even if a tool saves time on a task, the effect on a job depends on what happens next. An employer could use that time to improve service, take on more work, change responsibilities or reduce staffing. A task assessment alone cannot tell you which choice a business will make.
